Dear Skagit Valley Herald, and Mount Vernon Voters,

Last week a letter was published in the Skagit Valley Herald questioning my “intentions” in running for Mount Vernon City Council (David Smailes, 10/28/11).
I would like to respond:

I do not know the writer of this letter personally-- he has never contacted me
during this campaign to discuss his concerns. If any voters have questions about
my ideas or intentions to serve Mount Vernon, please phone me at 360-336-5350
and ask me directly. I will be happy to talk with you.

I have owned my home in Mount Vernon since 2002. I have worked for Seattle Schools as a counselor and special education teacher for over 20 years.
I love my job, my colleagues, and the children I teach.

Most weekday mornings I take the Skagit Transit 90X commuter bus to Everett with a busload of other hardy commuters. I drive my car from Everett Station to work in North Seattle, drive back to Everett after school, and return to Mount Vernon on the 90X.  Many people in Mount Vernon commute to work, but I do not think this is grounds for questioning their residency or commitment to their home and community. Indeed, we are bringing our income back to Mount Vernon to spend here!

On occasion, when I have a meeting or event to attend, or need to use the University of Washington library in the evening, I stay over in Seattle and come home the next day after work. My family and volunteer work are based in Mount Vernon.

One of my ideas to improve Mount Vernon is to create Community Councils
where people can meet regularly, get to know their neighbors, and work together on common concerns. I invite you to see my Vision Statement on my website, www.dorisbrevoort.com and focus on the positive contributions I would make to
